‘It’s Okay to Not be Okay’ might be a romantic K-drama but unlike most titles in this genre, it has a grim, fairytale-like setting. Director Park Shin Woo (‘Hyde, Jekyll and Me’, ‘Phantom’, and ‘Encounter’) has never shied away from addressing mental health issues in his projects, and this Netflix original is no different. The story is about three people — engulfed by their dark pasts. And the tale is narrated with such finesse that you can’t help but wait for the next episode.

In fact, each episode is woven around a fairytale and leaves a message. No wonder, the thoughtful, sensitive series managed to establish itself as one of the finest Korean shows on Netflix. Invoking empathy, awareness, and humor, ‘It’s Okay to Not be Okay’ has ended its first-season run, leaving us with the next question — will there be a follow-up edition? We are here to answer just that.

It’s Okay to Not be Okay Season 2 Release Date: Renewed or Canceled?

‘It’s Okay to Not be Okay’ season 1 premiered on June 20, 2020, on Netflix. After airing two weekly episodes every Saturday and Sunday, it ended with its 16th episode on August 9, 2020. All the episodes are additionally available for Korean fans on tvN.

If you are aware of the trend, Korean romantic dramas are generally created as one-offs. And this particular series does a wonderful job of closing off the entire storyline. What had begun as a tale of trauma ends with the characters healing themselves and each other. The lead protagonists confess their love for one another and end up together. We also learn about Moon Yeong’s mother’s motives. Heung Ja is taken away by the cops — and well, the first season has no loose threads. As you can see, we don’t see a reason for the creators stretching this show by another season. In one season, the drama has managed to leave its mark. So, in terms of content, ‘It’s Okay to Not be Okay’ season 2 is most likely canceled. However, noteworthy to mention here is the fact that its final two episodes showcased a major spike in ratings. Hence, there is a possibility that the makers may commission a new edition, based on popular fan demand. In this case, the new iteration can chronicle the journey of the characters after they achieve emotional growth. In the unlikely scenario that this happens, we can expect ‘It’s Okay to Not be Okay’ season 2 to release sometime in Summer 2021.
